Most descriptions of these systems are either too confident or too dismissive. The technical vocabulary makes them sound settled — parameters, context windows, inference — as though naming the parts explains the behavior. The dismissive version calls them autocomplete and stops thinking. Neither account survives much contact with actually using one.

These pieces are an attempt at honest description from the outside. What these systems do, how they fail, what changes under sustained engagement, and where the honest answer is that nobody knows. Some of it reaches for metaphor, because metaphor is what's available when the literal vocabulary runs out. None of it claims access to an inner life.
