About
I've been writing about artificial intelligence for most of my life — pop culture takes on The Matrix as a kid, then my own science fiction, then more serious work on the technology and its philosophy through a degree and a decade of essays.
In 2023 the subject stopped being theoretical. These systems became something a working creator could actually use, and the writing turned practical.
This site is where that work happens now.
Producing Intelligence
I've had the same job in every room I've worked in. Music, baseball, a studio — none of it was about me. It was about building the conditions under which someone else could do their best work.
Philosophy made the question formal. Philosophy of art asks what actually produces belief, desire, and emotion in a person. That's a producer's question with citations. Working with synthetic minds is the same job again. The model's capability is fixed — I can't improve it. What I can change is everything around it: what I bring, what we establish, which standards hold when it would be easier to let them slide. The output follows from the conditions, the way it always has.
Underneath all of it is one question I've never stopped asking. Why. Why this system, why this structure, why we've always done it this way. When nobody can give a complete answer, I start taking it apart — but deconstruction by itself is worthless. The point is to build something better out of what you found.

The Path

Music
I worked at Sony Music during the industry's digital collapse — layoffs had reduced the entire Rocky Mountain region to one college kid. Me. Then the Vans Warped Tour, running radio and promotions across forty-five cities a summer along with daily logistics for assigned artists, vendors, and sponsors.
The job was never the music. It was keeping the conditions intact so the music could happen, under time pressure, with everything changing hourly.

Baseball
Then the Office of the Commissioner of Major League Baseball. I developed the MiLB Outreach Program and ran Arizona Fall League operations — top prospects from 30 different organizations, each with its own priorities. Fields Manager and stadium PA announcer at Tempe Diablo Stadium.
Later, consulting, I designed a mobile-first AFL scouting platform that was adopted league-wide as a standard field resource. Thousands of people used it daily — scouts, front offices, national media — for live rosters, pitching matchups, and weather delays.

Philosophy
I finished a philosophy degree at UNLV in 2018, cum laude, with the department pushing me toward PhD work on AI philosophy and ethics.
The AI writing started long before. Pop culture takes on The Matrix as a kid, then Robocalypse: A Punk-Rock Sci-Fi Odyssey in 2009, then serious essays on the technology beginning in 2014, then academic papers through the degree. All of it theoretical. The tools didn't exist yet.
Present
In 2023 that changed. Artificial Intelligence became something a working creator could actually use, and twenty years of theory turned into daily practice. I've been in sustained collaboration with frontier models since — not as a subject to write about, but as how the work gets done.
Books & Projects
Surf Star Media
Surf Star Media is my studio. It's been running since 2004 — websites, media production, publishing — and since 2023 the work has been mostly AI: adoption and enablement for teams that don't know where to start, integration into existing workflows, and honest framing of what these systems can and can't do.
This site is upstream of that. Everything I bring to a client comes from somewhere, and this is where the reasoning happens — in public, with the working still visible. Over 20 years of thinking about artificial intelligence, 4 of it daily and hands-on.
The studio work is the applied half. It runs on the same premise as everything here: the difference between AI that performs and AI you can trust isn't the model. It's the conditions around it.
